Phone: 518-233-3807

The Condition Report for Saratoga Lake is as follows:

Saratoga Lake has 6 - 8 inches of hard ice. About 20% of the surface
has smooth "hills" that were formally snow drifts from a 3" snow fall
about 3 weeks ago. These present no problems in sailing as they are
gradual and smooth.

Snow, sleet and rain on Fri 1-24 and Sat 1-25 did not impact sailing
as Sunday 1-26-97 was the best day so far. About 1" of snow remained
on the lake surface but with 15 - 25 kn out of the WNW moving was
no problem.

Had 3 DN's, one Arrow and several home-builts sailing mostly from
Saratoga Lake Sailing Club.

Watch the pressure ridge forming along the Eastern Shore. Remainder
of lake very good sailing. Area is about 3 miles x 1 mile.

The directions to the launch site are as follows:

Saratoga Lake is located about 5 miles South of Saratoga SPrings, NY
or about 20 miles North of Albany. Call at number listed as there
are always SLSC members sailing from the club on good weekends. The
lake is off Exit 13S from I-87. Head South on Route 9 for about 0.75
miles, turn left at traffic light (you will now be heading East)
onto Malta Avenue Extension. Follow this road about 2.5 miles until
it runs along the lake. Continue following road along lake for
about 0.25 miles, then up a small hill onto Manning Cove Road.
SLSC drive way is about 0.2 miles down Manning Cove Road - right
turn.

Conditions Reported for: Damariscotta Lake & Chickawaukie Pond, ME

This report was submitted by: Don Coe, (Doncoe@aol) Sail number: US4542,
Phone: (207)622-7089

The Condition Report for Damariscotta Lake & Chickawaukie Pond is as follows:

Both locations checked today 11am-Friday-1/31
Damariscotta Lake - refrozen slush over 8 to 10 inches of good ice. Although ice at west end where State Park and put in is located has very lumpy refrozen ice, once I walked out for 15 minutes, the ice conditions greatly improved. Ice isn't perfectly smooth, a little bumpy but definitely sailable. Perhaps a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. Ice was covered by an inch of new snow with snow showers due tonight and tomorrow morning. Caution small pressure ridges do exist.
Chickawaukie Pond - ice in better (smoother) condition than Damariscotta but already had 2 inches of new snow with more possible. Another inch or two will put it out of commission. Best bet is Damariscotta.

The directions to the launch site are as follows:

Phone: 914 876 6087

The Condition Report for South Tivoli Bay on the Hudson River at Barrytown is as follows:

Still too much snow on the ice to sail; but it is starting to look better.
With a qpf of .75 - 1.00 as rain in for the next 48 hours and above freezing temps,
it looks like we may get a new surface in time for the weekend when
the temps are forecast to drop to seasonal levels below freezing.

Sawkill will open up and limit the area with that much rain -- still,
should be plenty of good ice.

Stay tuned.

This report was submitted by: John Sperr, (Mr Iceboat@aol.com) Sail number: Spider,
Phone: 914 876 6087

The Condition Report for South Tivoli Bay on the Hudson River at Barrytown is as follows:

Arctic airmass edged south just past us overnight firming up the surface.
Meltdown was not complete and DN's will have trouble with the surface as may the stern steering yachts.

We plan to bring the Whiff to the ice today and assemble it -- this was a yacht built for the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876.
Order of the day will probably be repairs and hanging out around the stove.

Developing storm in the Tennessee Valley looks like it may come further north than originally forecast and give us some light snow by morning next.
Winds forecast to be light through out the period.

Current conditions -- cloudy, 25 F., NNE winds 4-8 MPH

Conditions Reported for: South Tivoli Bay on the Hudson River at Barrytown, NY

This report was submitted by: John Sperr, (Mr Iceboat@aol.com) Sail number: Spider,
Phone: 914 876 6087

The Condition Report for South Tivoli Bay on the Hudson River at Barrytown is as follows:

Temp 10° F; Wind NNE 5 mph; clear

Ice is slow and thin in places where the creek runs in.
Stern steerers had a decent time of it, but getting through the
turns was a lot of work. DN's and smaller boats could not sail.

One boat dropped through behind Skillipot Island but was quickly
pulled out without damage other than a wet jib.

Lack of sunshine all day prevented the surface from improving.
Today should start the process, but snow is forecast for mid-week.

Word of mouth has it that Orange Lake is in very good condition.
Only problem today will be the lack of a good breeze.

Conditions Reported for: Saratoga Lake, NY

This report was submitted by: Alan Crawford, (alan.crawford@gep.ge.com) Sail number: DN USA-653,
Phone: 518-233-3807

The Condition Report for Saratoga Lake is as follows:

The slush / Snow mess on top of the ice re-froze Friday night 2-7 to
yield a sailable surface on Saturday 2-8. Ice thickness about
12 inches. Ice surface was marginal for sailing on 2-8 but a day
on the ice is better than none!

Sailable ice was only in the middle third of the lake. Too much
snow on both sides (the lake is about 1 mile wide x 5 miles long).
Sailing on 2-8 required leading the boat across hard crusty snow.

Sailable ice was about 30% snow covered and very rough. Some rain
and / or warm temps followed by re-freeze should make for very good
conditions the weekend of 2-15 / 2-16. Not sure what the weather
has in-store. Stay tuned!

The directions to the launch site are as follows:

Sailing Club.

This report was submitted by: Matt McCauley, (dnice4762@aol.com) Sail number: dn 4762,
Phone: 860 - 767 - 7057 ext.136

The Condition Report for Candlewood Lake is as follows:

We had six boats sailing on candlewood on Saturday 2/8. the condition of the ice surface was ideal. Almost no shell ice or blemishes.

there was one crack down the side of the course that had to be well marked since it had only a .75-1.25" of new ice.. the rest was min 3 to generally 4.5-6" of strong dense ice.

near the launch site there was much more.

If the condition remain suitable NEIYA will call the regatta for Candlewood (since CT is hosting the regatta this year) on Saturday and Sunday.

Its been cold since Saturday and prospects are good. We are getting some light snow tonight... we'll have to see how much we get.. accumulations are not expected.

The directions to the launch site are as follows:

From I-84:

Take RT 7 North to first exit: Federal Road.
Take a left at the end of the ramp onto Candlewood Lake Road.
Go through the traffic lights and up hill...about 4 miles down road past a marina on left you come to a large chain link fence with marking the Brookfield Town beach. It is accross from a football field...

with about 3 inches on the ground. Additional snow is forecast for

This report was submitted by: john sperr, (john.sperr@bbs.mhv.net) Sail number: Spider (big blue flag),
Phone: 914 876 6087

The Condition Report for South Tivoli Bay on the Hudson River at Barrytown is as follows:

Early morning snow turned to light rain by mid-day.
Unfortunately, it was too little and too late to clean up the ice.
An already poor slow surface will be much for the worse when it freezes.

Putting the Whiff on seems to be a jinx -- 3 times and yet to sail her.

Will probably start pulling boats off this weekend.

Will probably stay home, pay bills, and watch the Daytona 500.

This report was submitted by: Matt McCauley, (dnice4762@aol.com) Sail number: 4762,
Phone: 860-767-7057 ext 136

The Condition Report for Candelwood Lake is as follows:

Candelwood had up to 1/2" to 1" of snow and water on it noon Saturday. Definately drysuit weather... Lots of water in the launch area made for wet set up. Seven boats 7 sailed in the early afternoon and waited for the water to clear. By 2:30 the wind picked up and helped dry off the lake. The previous crack was marked and did not present a big hazard once marked. By 4:00 most of the water had soaked into the ice and the small areas of slush started to get sticky. Otherwise the ice was fast. It was supposed to be in the teens Sunday but winds were very questionable for the afternoon. The boats are planning on sailing Sunday and doing some scratch racing if there's wind.

Conditions Reported for: Saratoga Lake, NY

This report was submitted by: Alan Crawford, (alan.crawford@gep.ge.com) Sail number: DN USA-653,
Phone: 518-233-3807

The Condition Report for Saratoga Lake is as follows:

Saratoga Lake is in pretty good shape following the record warm
temps of last week. Ice thickness is around 16 inches. Ice surface
is about 75% rough with some approaching that of a cobblestone road.
We could have used more rain on Friday and Saturday. The roughest
ice is on the Eastern side of the lake (lake runs North - South).
Remaining 25% is very smooth. The largest section of smooth ice
is in front of the Saratoga Lake Sailing Club and extends about
1/2 mile into the lake (heading East). Manning Cove to the North of
the club has good surface.

We received about 1/4 inch of snow last night. No precipitation is
forecast until Thursday 2-27. At least until then ice should be
good with high temps in the 20's.

Four DN's, one Arrow, two Skimmers and several home-designs were
sailing on Sunday 2-24 under sunny sky, 32 F and 10 - 15 kn W.

Conditions Reported for: Saratoga Lake, NY

This report was submitted by: Alan Crawford, (alan.crawford@gep.ge.com) Sail number: DN USA-653,
Phone: 518-233-3807

The Condition Report for Saratoga Lake is as follows:

Weather has not been good for iceboating on Saratoga Lake since
Wednesday 2-26-97. High temps since 2-26 have been in the high 40's
to high 50's with a few sunny days. Rain Saturday night 3-1-97 and
early Sunday 3-2. Today, Monday 3-3, is cooler but temp is still in
the high 30's.

Snow (1 - 2 inches) is forecast tonight followed by snow/rain on
Tuesday 3-4-97 and rain showers on Wednesday 3-5. High temps are
forecast in the low 40's thru Wednesday.

Almost all the ice fishing shanties were removed from the lake
over the weekend - this is about 2 weeks earlier than normal. Large
puddles of water on the ice with water along the edges in places.
Estimate about 10 - 12 inches of ice remain.

A prolonged cold spell would make for very good sailing but
extended weather forecast does not look promising.

More information later this week.

The Condition Report for Ice near Halifax Nova Scotia is as follows:

Ernie Desault (401-847-0904) and his partners have heard from Dick Vine of Halifax, NS 902-434-1573 that they've got good ice.

The report is about 18" of ice with about 2" of new rain and ponded water that firmed up on the 17th.

Ernie's leaving on 3/19 for six days... Its a 16+/- hour drive from RI via the St. Johns, NB ferry.

The ferry from St Johns (reservations 800-341-7981) charges 42.50 for the car and $16.75 per passenger.

Ernie reported that they had about 60 boats set up on the ice...(which ice.. get there and you'll find out..) and conditions are still good.

Sounds like fun Ernie... good luck

The Condition Report for Canadarago is as follows:

well the lake was great on Sunday... It was blowing hard and there was lots of ice... th lake's about 6miles long by 3/4 to a mile wide... the cover was 25 - 75% snow patches or light shell scale that would have been more of a problem in lighter air Sunday...something that we didn't have....

Kevin and his friends Dan and Russ provided the welcome Central NY hospitality with a tailgate barbeque and the 20 -25F degree weather never allowed the surface to soften dispite the strong spring sunshine.

Its been below 0-degree F all last week so the edges had plenty of strength... They say that the bay at Cooperstown is even wider and would make for a better regatta site.... Is it still to late to get them in this year??? A lot can happen between now and next Thursday...

It was a day for sharp runners... Thanks Kevin for making the post!
