The Condition Report for is as follows:

Ice Dwarfs,
Looks like we'll miss this snow. That means we should have ice this
weekend. Several of us will be out on the ice checking it out on Friday. At
this time I believe it will be on Webber Pond in Vassalboro, just North of
Augusta, a few miles off Rte# 201.
Webber had 3 to 4 inches of milk colored ice on Tuesday. With cold nights
forecast for the next several days, it should do nothing but improve. There is
also adequate launching at the public landing on the South end of the pond.
Anyone interested please join us for a Friday sail. This will give us a chance
to evaluate the ice for our 1st official ice time on the weekend. That would
put our 1st regatta, The Linc Davis, on the following weekend.
Info will be on the hotline but if interested on sailing with us on
Friday, best to give me a call on Thursday night - 622-7089.
Ice picks and a PFD (life jacket) will be worn by me. Take it for what
it's worth.

Later guys,
Don

Sailing here was picture perfect, judging by the 20 or so enjoying the
sport here today. I drove right to lakeside, at Allen A beach. My
mom watched while I sailed my first sail in many years. Sunshine,
great wind, and great ice. Come all on Sunday, if you can! Allen
Stevens has made some good arrangements for access.

Happy sailing,

Conditions Reported for: Tivoli Bay - Hudson River, NY

This report was submitted by: John Sperr, (MrIceboat@ulster.net) Sail number: ,
Phone: 914 876-6087

The Condition Report for Tivoli Bay - Hudson River is as follows:

No ice yet -- the Hudson River is completely open and Tivoli Bay has a skim of ice in the shallow areas. Warm weather and rain has followed the pattern of the past several years -- cold November; warm December.

Best news is the prospect for a major dump of snow Monday - Tuesday. This will get River cold enough that it stops eroding the ice in the Bay. The Bay does not have enough ice to support the snow so it will quickly saturate and give us some snow ice and a clean surface if we get some cold air behind the storm.

The Condition Report for Massabesic is as follows:

Lake slush refroze last night. We got 1/2 inch of snow followed by lots of rain out of the last storm. Surface looks quite sailable, some pressure ridges are starting to form. Nearshore there is approximately 6-8+ inches of ice. Have not scouted entire lake. One spot in mid lake (due south of Rte 121 launch and 3/4 mile out) just froze last week and has been periodically open and frozen since. Best to stay away from it until it is fully investigated. Lots of room to sail away from that spot. Ask locals for info on location of that spot and others (inlets etc) before heading out. Tonight lows are forcast in the single numbers. Should make lots of ice. I will do a more thorough recon tomorrow and most likely sail. Be careful and scout it out first.

Luckily, the pilot got out after a swim and a struggle. The boat may have been lost. There is plenty of good ice and easy access in the east basin, please stay there for now. Conditions Reported for: Hudson River - Tivoli Bays South Bay, New York

This report was submitted by: Robert S. Wills, (robwills@ulster.net) Sail number: "Kriss",
Phone: 914.876.2298

The Condition Report for Hudson River - Tivoli Bays South Bay is as follows:

1600 25 January 1998

South Bay has a substantial snow- ice cover with a smooth surface, of approximately 4" depth. At low tide, the ice sheet withstood
the pressure of the bottom on the ice undersurface. However, warm River temperatures are continuing to erode
the ice surface at all four inlets from the river, most significantly, from the Middle Bridge north ~1/2 mile to a point in line with the
Levi Institute, extending fom the west shore of the bay to the middle of the bay, near Skillypot Island. The South Bridge has an opening
of ~50yds. width running east ~1/4 mile. Typical open water exists at the Sawkill, on the east side of the Bay, but appears to have thin
ice forming there. An ice surface does exist, however, from the South Shore to the North Shore. (True, but I'll say anything to cheer us up!)

Access is still an issue to be resolved. A meeting at the Tivoli Town Hall on 29 Jan.(time unknown; tel no: 757.2021) will address access
to the Bay. Be there and put in a word for ice access!

A report of beautiful ice on Bantam as of 8am Monday 1/26. According to the

it as a 9 on a 1-10. Hard and shiny with just enough grain to stop the side-

Just so everyone doesn't give up, Moosehead Lake has 2-3' of solid ice
covered by a combination of slush and frozen snow. Rain is forecast for

It usually stays cold here through most of March due to latitude and
elevation and the snow cover on the ice is far less now than in most
years, so spring sailing is a definite probability. I will post a report
when the surface has firmed up.
