1997 NEIYA Regatta Results

Doc Fellows Regatta:

The Doc Fellows Regatta was run on Sunday February 2, 1997 after one month of postponements. The conditions on Webster Lake, in Webster MA were smooth clear ice, 35-40 degree temperatures and 3 to 10 mph westerly winds.

Five races were run starting after an early morning lull that had pilots reminicing about the postponed New Englands regatta attempted on Mallets Bay in 1996 when the entire fleet showed up and the wind failed to materialize.

Nevertheless after a short delay racing began shortly after noon and continued until the last race around 4:00pm.

18 boats registered and 15 boats completed the last race. No accidents or collisions occurred during the race although, due to the softening ice, one pilot Bob fell through thin ice while attempting to retrieve caution flags posted near open water holes. Apparantly the warm weather during the day weakened the ice and extended the range of the bad ice significantly.

The New England Championship Regatta:

The New England Championship Regatta was run on Sunday February 23, 1997 after nearly one month of postponements. The conditions on Mallets Bay in Colchester, VT were a mix of smooth clear ice, moderately rough ice. The surface was virtually free of snow due to the rain and extremely warm weather during several days earlier in the week. Only a few very limited areas of shallow shell ice were noted on the moderate size course. 25-30 degree temperatures and 5 to 12 mph occilating north westerly winds were the order of the day.

Five races were run starting after the 11:10 skippers meeting on the ice. The couse was run in outer Mallets bay on approximatley a 1.1 mile course between two widely separated pressure ridges. The first race began before noon after a short warm up lap and the fifth race was concluded by 3:00. All five races were scored with no throw out race.

20 boats registered and 19 boats completed the last race. No accidents or collisions occurred during the race nor did any boats suffer severe self inflicted equipment damage during the races...(for a change).

The race committee was commended for running a speedy and efficient regatta.

After the race the pilots were greeted by an unexpeceted snow mobil drag race event at the launch site.  If the DN's hadn't run out of wind in the cove they would have been able to our run any of the "smokers".
